Episode #21: The "Super Systems" of Pain and Holistic Pain Management // Ananda Mahony

Ananda Mahony is a naturopath with a special interest in working with people who are struggling with chronic, ongoing pain that's caused by a wide range of conditions such as neuropathy, endometriosis, migraine, IBS and fibromyalgia, autoimmune or injury-related pain amongst others.

Feeling frustrated by the number of patients she saw getting recommended isolated pain management strategies and treatments, Ananda set out to provide a much more holistic approach to pain management.

This month, Ananda talks to us about the mechanisms that drive chronic pain, how pain is more than an issue in the tissues or a perception in the brain and we focus especially on the role our neuro-endocrine-immune "super systems" play in chronic pain.

In this episode, Ananda and Gabe chat about:

  • The common misconceptions about pain and its management
  • Differences between acute and chronic pain
  • How the body's natural pain response works
  • How the neuro-endocrine-immune super system works in chronic pain
  • Increasing our capacity to adapt
  • The relationship between chronic pain and trauma
  • The negative triad of pain, sleep and mood
  • The role of sense making, stress, sleep, movement, social engagement and diet in pain management
